According to the WWF there is no broad protection for the ecological integrity of this region heavily settled by herders. The rivers and streams are also under threat by gold panning and processing industries such as copper and cement. The Dalmatian Pelican, the largest of all pelicans, makes its home here along with 17 other species listed in the Mongolian Red Data Book.
